Hunedoara

Transylvanian industrial city best known for Corvin Castle, a Gothic fortress above the river.

Hunedoara is a gritty industrial city in western Transylvania, famous for something thoroughly at odds with its smoky steel mills: one of the finest Gothic castles in Central Europe. Corvin Castle — known in Romanian as Castelul Corvinilor — rises from a rocky outcrop above the town's river, its towers and drawbridge as dramatic as any castle on the continent. Built in the 15th century by John Hunyadi, the castle was later associated with the young Vlad the Impaler, who is said to have been imprisoned here.

Beyond the castle, Hunedoara has little to offer — the city is dominated by a massive steelworks that gives it a hard, post-industrial character. But the castle alone is worth the trip, and it makes a natural day trip from Cluj-Napoca or Deva.
