Argeș County is genuinely beautiful and Pitești is an excellent base for exploring it. The monasteries of Curtea de Argeș (45 km) and Corbii de Piatră are worth a half day each. For mountains, the Fagaraș range is accessible from the south, and the Transfăgărășan road — arguably Romania's most spectacular drive — starts just north of the city. Bran Castle, known internationally as "Dracula's Castle," is around 130 km away; interesting enough for the setting and history, but go in knowing that the Dracula connection is mostly tourism mythology.
