The Breite Oak Tree Reserve is a 74-hectare nature reserve on a plateau above Sighisoara, about 4 kilometres from the citadel. It contains hundreds of ancient oak trees, some estimated at over 800 years old, growing in the traditional "Hutweide" pattern — widely spaced trees in open meadow — that was once common across central Europe before modern farming destroyed it almost everywhere else.
The reserve is protected precisely because this ancient land-use pattern survived here by accident. Walking among the oaks in spring, when the meadow is full of wildflowers and the trees are in new leaf, is a surprisingly moving experience — this is what the Saxon landscape of Transylvania once looked like across hundreds of kilometres. The reserve is accessible on foot from Sighisoara and has no admission charge.
