Scholars' Stairs

The Scholars' Stairs — Scara Scolarilor in Romanian — is the covered wooden staircase of 175 steps connecting the lower town to the Church on the Hill. Built in 1642 with a protective timber roof, it was originally used by schoolchildren making their way up to the school beside the church each morning. The roof kept the steps clear of snow and ice in winter; it also created a dim, enclosed passage that feels entirely medieval even today.

At the top, you emerge into the quieter precinct of the hilltop, with the church on your left and the German cemetery spreading across the slope. The descent is easier on the legs and offers glimpses through gaps in the roof out over the citadel below. The staircase is free to use and accessible at any time.
