Vlad Dracul House

The house at Tin Street No. 1, between the Citadel Square and the Clock Tower, is where Vlad Tepes — known as Vlad the Impaler, the historical figure behind the Dracula legend — was born around 1431. His father, Vlad II Dracul (Vlad the Dragon), lived here while serving as military governor of Transylvania. The building has been a restaurant since the 1970s, which means you can sit at a table where Dracula was born and order a plate of sarmale.

The restaurant, Casa Vlad Dracul, serves traditional Romanian food — cabbage rolls, meatballs, grilled meats, and local wines from the Târnava valley. The medieval atmosphere is genuine even if the Dracula angle is played up commercially; the food is honest and the prices are modest. Worth eating here once for the location alone.
