Derbent is, in effect, a living museum — the city's main attractions are all tied to its extraordinary history as the ancient gateway of the Caucasus. The citadel, the defensive walls, the converted mosque, and the old cemeteries reward slow exploration on foot. Most of the key sights are walkable from the old town.
