Dom Chaya, the House of Tea, is a long-running Tatar canteen on Bauman Street where you order at the counter, point at what looks good, and carry the tray to a wood-bench table. The food is honest Tatar home cooking — echpochmak, chak-chak, soup, plov, salads — done at a price that lets you eat a full lunch for the equivalent of a couple of dollars.
Service is brisk and dishes turn over quickly through the lunch rush. A good first stop for trying Tatar staples before deciding which ones to follow up with at the more formal restaurants in the Old Tatar Quarter. Open daily until early evening; no alcohol.
