Bauman Street is the main retail spine of central Kazan, with department stores, fashion shops, souvenir stalls, and bookstores along its length. The Koltso shopping centre at the southern end is the largest mall in the centre. For Tatar souvenirs — embroidered slippers, tubeteika skullcaps, painted boxes, chak-chak sweets in tins — small shops in the Old Tatar Quarter sell better quality than the tourist stalls in the Kremlin.
For a real market, the Central Market (Tsentralny Rynok) two stops east of Tukay Square on the metro is the place for cheese, dried fruit, smoked horse-meat sausage, and the kind of food you cannot buy in supermarkets. The local department store GUM, on the south side of the Kremlin, sells Tatar goods in a more curated setting.
