The Central Market (Tsentralny Rynok) is the main fresh-food market of Kazan, in a large covered hall east of Bauman Street. Producers from across Tatarstan and the Volga region sell fruit, vegetables, cheese, smoked fish, honey, herbs, spices, and the dense aromatic Tatar smoked meat that is the local speciality.
Bargaining is mild — prices are usually marked. The market is at its best on Saturday mornings when traders bring in fresh stock; quieter and less interesting on weekday afternoons. A good place to assemble a picnic, taste honey or katyk, and see the agricultural variety of the Volga.
