Tatarskaya Usadba

Address Marjani Street 8

Tatarskaya Usadba (Tatar Manor) is the best-known sit-down Tatar restaurant in the Old Tatar Quarter, occupying a restored 19th-century merchant's house a few steps from the Märcani Mosque. The dining rooms are decorated in carved wood and embroidered textiles; the menu covers the full Tatar canon — azu stewed beef, kystyby folded flatbread, slow-cooked horse meat sausage, layered gubadiya, and the obligatory honeycomb of chak-chak.

Service is in Tatar costume but the staff speak Russian and patchy English. Live folk music on weekend evenings, sometimes including the kubyz mouth-harp. Reservations advisable; prices are higher than the city average but reasonable by international standards.
