Gorky Park

Gorky Park stretches along the Kuban River in the southern part of central Krasnodar, a long green space with tree-lined alleys, fountains, a small funfair, and the riverside atmosphere that makes southern Russian cities pleasant in warm weather. The park connects to the riverside promenade that runs along the bank of the Kuban.

In summer the park is busy from morning to midnight — families, joggers, young people at the cafes along the edge, and older Krasnodar residents on their evening constitutional. The park is at its best in late spring and early summer when the chestnut trees are in bloom and the temperatures are still comfortable before the July heat sets in.

A story
Krasnodar's Gorky Park occupies a stretch of land along the Kuban River that was used as a public garden since the city's founding in the 1790s. The Cossack settlers called it the "city garden" and treated it as a social commons. The park was renamed for Maxim Gorky in the Soviet period, as parks across Russia were, and unlike many Soviet-era parks, this one has been genuinely maintained and improved in the post-Soviet decades.
