Saint Andrew's Cathedral

Saint Andrew's Cathedral is the main Orthodox church of Kronstadt, an 18th-century building of considerable historical weight. It is most famous as the church of Father John of Kronstadt — Ivan Ilyich Sergiev — who was the parish priest here from 1855 until his death in 1908 and became one of the most remarkable figures in the history of Russian Orthodoxy.

The cathedral was largely demolished by Soviet authorities in 1932 and has been rebuilt in recent decades. It now functions as an active parish church and a place of pilgrimage for devotees of Father John, whose memory is still actively venerated across the Russian Orthodox world. The rebuilt interior is functional rather than historically rich, but the site's associations are powerful for those who know the story.

A story
Father John of Kronstadt (Ivan Sergiev, 1829-1908) served at Saint Andrew's for 53 years and became the most famous Orthodox priest in imperial Russia. People came from across the country to receive his blessing. His charisma was extraordinary: he held services with thousands of communicants simultaneously, moving through the crowd with the chalice. Tsar Nicholas II called him to his father Alexander III's deathbed. He was canonised by the Russian Orthodox Church in 1990.
