Yaroslav's Court

Medieval princely compound with a cluster of 12th-century churches

Yaroslav's Court sits on the east bank of the Volkhov River, directly across from the Kremlin, and was the former site of the princely palace and the great market of the Novgorod Republic. The palace itself is long gone, but the area is remarkable for its concentration of medieval churches — several 12th and 13th-century Orthodox churches still stand within a few hundred metres of each other, making this one of the densest collections of medieval architecture in Russia.

The district includes the Saint Nicholas Cathedral (1113), the Church of St Paraskevi (1207), and several other churches in various states of preservation. The open square between them was once the marketplace where Novgorod's famous trade in furs, wax, and grain took place. It is a short walk across the bridge from the Kremlin and makes a natural pairing with a visit to that side of the river.

A story
At its height, Yaroslav's Court was the political and commercial heart of the Novgorod Republic — a democratic city-state that elected its own princes and maintained trade connections from Flanders to the Volga. The great market here was one of the busiest in medieval Europe, and the church of St Nicholas was deliberately built to overshadow the Cathedral of St Sophia across the river, asserting the merchant class's power against the bishop's.
