Great Patriotic War Memorial

The Second World War memorial complex in Oryol marks one of the city's most significant historical moments: its liberation in August 1943 after two years of German occupation. The Battle of Kursk, fought in July and August of that year, was the largest tank battle in history, and Oryol was at its northern edge. The liberation was celebrated in Moscow with a special artillery salute — the first of the war — marking the victory.

The memorial includes an eternal flame, bronze figures of Soviet soldiers, and plaques listing units that fought in the area. The site is carefully maintained and remains a place of genuine civic importance, particularly on Victory Day (9 May) when local ceremonies are held here. The setting on a rise above the Oka River gives it a quiet dignity.

A story
On 5 August 1943, when Soviet forces liberated Oryol and Belgorod, Stalin ordered the first artillery salute of the war — twelve salvoes of 124 guns — to be fired in Moscow. The tradition of saluting liberated cities continued for the rest of the war. Oryol has the distinction of triggering that first salute.
