Oryol's main draw is its literary heritage — three major Russian writers were born here, and the city wears that distinction proudly. Beyond the museums, there's a pleasant historic core with a few churches and war memorials, and the nearby Turgenev estate is one of the best-preserved writer's estates in Russia.
