Perm Opera and Ballet Theatre

Perm's opera and ballet theatre is one of the finest in Russia outside Moscow and St Petersburg. The city has cultivated a strong performing arts tradition since the 19th century, and the theatre today continues to stage high-quality productions year-round. Ballet is the main draw — the company has a particularly strong reputation for classical Russian repertoire.

The building itself, a classical-style white and yellow structure in the city centre, is worth seeing from the outside even if you are not attending a performance. Check the schedule on arrival; performances are typically Tuesday through Sunday evenings with some matinees. Tickets are reasonably priced by international standards and often available at the box office on the day.

A story
Anna Pavlova, widely considered the greatest ballerina of the 20th century and the originator of the dying swan solo, was born in Perm. The city's tradition of producing outstanding dancers and choreographers continues to this day — Perm's ballet school is one of the most competitive in Russia, attracting students from across the country.
