Perm punches well above its weight culturally for a Russian provincial city. Its opera and ballet are among the best outside Moscow and St Petersburg, and in the 2000s the city briefly became famous as a centre of contemporary art under the Perm-36 and Perm Museum XXI projects. The historic centre along the Kama River is worth a morning's walk, and several unusual monuments dot the city streets.
