The small clay-walled cottage on Ulitsa Lermontova is where Mikhail Lermontov rented rooms in the final weeks of his life. The house has been preserved as a museum since 1912, making it one of the oldest literary museums in Russia. The furnishings are period pieces rather than original Lermontov property, but the house conveys the modest domestic scale of provincial Caucasian life in the 1840s.
The garden behind the house is as important as the interior. Lermontov described it in his writing, and the view from the garden toward Mashuk has not changed dramatically since his time. The museum also has a good collection of period illustrations and engravings of the Mineral Waters region. Open Wednesday through Sunday; closed Monday and Tuesday.
