Ivan Pavlov, the Nobel laureate famous for his work on conditioned reflexes, was born in Ryazan in 1849. The house where he grew up on Pavlova Street is now a memorial museum preserving his childhood home with period furnishings. A separate annex covers his scientific career and the experiments at his St Petersburg laboratory that made him one of the most cited scientists of the twentieth century.
The museum is a modest but well-maintained institution, popular with Russian visitors who come specifically to see the birthplace of one of their country's most celebrated scientists. The nearby Church of the Zachatiya, where Pavlov's father served as a priest, still stands a short walk away.
