Spaso-Preobrazhensky Monastery

The Spaso-Preobrazhensky (Transfiguration) Monastery stands on the bank of the Trubezh River, clearly visible from the Kremlin walls across the water. Founded in the thirteenth century and rebuilt over subsequent centuries, it presents an attractive ensemble of white-walled buildings with a distinctive bell tower. The monastery is still active and the grounds are open to visitors.

The setting by the river — with the monastery's white walls reflected in the water — is one of the more picturesque views in Ryazan, particularly in the early morning or at dusk. It is a short walk from the Kremlin, making it a natural extension of any tour of the historic centre.
