Alexandrinsky Theatre

Russia's oldest national drama theatre occupies a magnificent Empire-style building designed by Carlo Rossi and completed in 1832. Named after Empress Alexandra Feodorovna, the theatre sits on Ostrovsky Square as the centerpiece of one of Rossi's finest architectural ensembles, which includes the perfectly proportioned Rossi Street behind it. The building is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the facade, with its columned portico topped by Apollo's chariot, is one of St. Petersburg's most recognizable landmarks. The company has premiered works by Gogol, Chekhov, and other giants of Russian drama. Even if you don't catch a performance, the exterior and surrounding square are worth a dedicated visit along Nevsky Prospekt.
