Bronze Horseman

Peter the Great on horseback, St Petersburg's defining monument

The Bronze Horseman on Senate Square is St Petersburg's most iconic monument — a dramatic statue of Peter the Great on a rearing horse, its hind legs trampling a serpent. Commissioned by Catherine the Great and sculpted by Etienne Falconet, it was unveiled in 1782. Pushkin immortalized it in his 1833 poem of the same name.

The square is a short walk from Nevsky Prospekt metro station along the Griboedov Canal embankment.

A story
The pedestal is a single granite boulder weighing 1,600 tonnes, dragged from a swamp near St Petersburg — it took nine months and hundreds of men to move it to Senate Square.
