Dostoevsky Museum

The Dostoevsky Memorial Apartment on Kuznechny Lane is the last home of Fyodor Dostoevsky, who lived here from 1878 until his death in 1881, and where he wrote The Brothers Karamazov. The apartment has been restored to look exactly as it did during his residence — the family's furniture, his clock stopped at the moment of his death, his cigarette case, even the hat and cane by the door.

The museum next door, in an adjacent apartment, gives broader context on Dostoevsky's life, his exile in Siberia, his troubled relationships with money and women, and his place in 19th-century Russian intellectual life. Worth two hours for anyone who has read the novels. The nearest metro is Vladimirskaya, two minutes away. English audio guides are available.

A story
Dostoevsky moved into this apartment on Kuznechny Lane in October 1878 and died here on 28 January 1881, two months after finishing The Brothers Karamazov. He wrote the novel at the small wooden writing desk that is still in the study. The clock in his study has been stopped at 8:38 pm, the moment of his death.
