Kazan Cathedral

The Cathedral of Our Lady of Kazan is the main Orthodox church of Volgograd, a large white-and-gold structure with blue domes that was rebuilt and expanded following the Soviet period. The original church on this site was destroyed; the current building dates from the post-Soviet reconstruction era and is one of the largest Orthodox churches in the Volga region.

The interior is richly decorated in the traditional Orthodox manner with icons, frescoes, and gilded iconostases. Services are held daily and are open to respectful visitors. The cathedral sits in a quiet square near the city centre and makes a calm counterpoint to the relentless military memorial landscape that defines most of Volgograd's sightseeing.
