Practical Information

Visas

San Marino has no border controls with Italy. If you can enter Italy, you can enter San Marino. Schengen visa rules apply in practice, since you must pass through Italy to get there.

Money

The currency is the Euro (EUR). San Marino also mints its own euro coins, which are legal tender throughout the eurozone and popular with collectors. Credit cards are widely accepted in shops, restaurants, and museums. ATMs are available in the historic center.

Language

Italian is the official language. English is spoken in tourist areas and hotels but less so off the main streets.

Safety

San Marino is extremely safe. Petty crime is rare, and you can walk around freely at any hour.

Passport stamp

The tourist information office at Contrada del Collegio in the old town will stamp your passport for a small fee (around 5 EUR). It is a popular souvenir and one of the few reasons to bring your passport on a day trip from Italy.

Opening hours

Museums and towers generally open from 9:00 to 17:00 in winter and until 19:00 or 20:00 in summer. A combined ticket for the main museums and towers is available and offers good value if you plan to visit several.
