The splavovi are floating bars and clubs moored along the banks of the Sava and Danube rivers, and they are the defining feature of Belgrade's famous nightlife scene. Most of them cluster along the Novi Beograd side of the Sava, forming a continuous strip of venues that range from laid-back riverside bars to high-energy turbo-folk clubs that keep going until dawn. On summer weekends, the riverbanks become the most crowded and lively part of the city.
Each splav has its own character — some play electronic music, others turbo-folk, others a mix of Balkan pop and international hits. The best approach is to walk along the river in the evening, listen to what is coming from each one, and choose accordingly. There is no single famous one to go to: the scene rotates its favourites, and the best splav on any given night is the one where the right crowd has gathered. Entry is usually free or cheap; drinks are Belgrade prices, which means reasonable. Getting there on foot from Stari Grad takes about 20 minutes across the bridge.
