The Tatra Electric Railway — Tatranská elektrická železnica, or TEŽ — runs from Poprad station up into the High Tatras, connecting the city to the mountain resorts of Tatranská Lomnica, Starý Smokovec, and Štrbské Pleso. The journey takes 40–50 minutes to the top terminus and passes through increasingly dramatic mountain scenery as the valley rises toward the peaks.
For any visit to the Tatras, the railway is the sensible way to travel. Driving to the Tatra resorts involves navigating narrow mountain roads and fighting for parking; the train runs frequently, is cheap, and lets you watch the mountains instead of the road. The railcars are antique and comfortable, and on a clear day the views of the Tatra peaks from the windows are exceptional. Ski season in winter and hiking season in summer both see the line running to capacity.
