Vršič Pass

Vršič Pass is the high mountain road linking Kranjska Gora with the Soča Valley. Its hairpins, limestone peaks, and sudden drops make it one of Slovenia's great drives, and cyclists treat it as a serious badge of honour.

Go in clear weather and do not rush it. The road is narrow and busy in summer, but the views are exceptional, and the descent toward the Soča side is one of the best transitions in the Julian Alps.

A story
The road's cobbled hairpins were built for military access during the First World War. Today they are a rite of passage for cyclists and drivers, but the route began as hard strategic labour in dangerous mountain weather.
