Novo Mesto is about 70 kilometres south-east of Ljubljana, an easy hour's drive or a scenic train ride.
Train: Regular services run from Ljubljana to Novo Mesto, taking about 1 hour 15 minutes. The line follows the Krka valley for much of its length, which makes it one of the more pleasant train journeys in Slovenia. The station is a short walk from the old town.
Bus: Buses also connect Ljubljana and Novo Mesto frequently throughout the day. The journey takes about 1 hour 15 minutes. Buses also serve Dolenjske Toplice, Brežice, and Metlika.
Car: From Ljubljana, take the A2/E70 motorway southeast and exit at Novo Mesto. The drive takes about 50–60 minutes in normal traffic.
From Croatia: Novo Mesto is close to the Croatian border. From Zagreb, take the A3/E70 to Bregana and then follow the road north through Metlika; allow about 2 hours.
