Orpheus Monument

The Orpheus Monument is a Roman marble stele from the 2nd century AD, standing in Ptuj's main square (Slovenski trg) where it has been for nearly two thousand years. The carved relief shows Orpheus surrounded by animals entranced by his music, along with an inscription in Latin. It is one of the best-preserved Roman monuments in Slovenia.

The stele originally served as a funerary monument; its later use as a medieval pillory gives it an unusually layered history. A few minutes examining it from all sides reveals the quality of the Roman carving still visible despite centuries outdoors.

A story
The monument was repurposed as a pillory during the Middle Ages — the hole at the base was used to lock up wrongdoers in public view. It has stood in the main square continuously since Roman times, making it one of the oldest outdoor monuments in Slovenia.
