Beneath the historic centre of Ptuj lies an extraordinary network of vaulted wine cellars, some of which date back more than seven centuries. The cellars run for over two kilometres and are maintained at a constant cool temperature ideal for ageing the white wines of the Podravje region — Šipon (Furmint), Laški Rizling, and Chardonnay are all produced here.
The cellars are run by the Ptuj Wine Cellar (Vinag), Slovenia's oldest commercial winery, founded in 1239. Guided tours with tastings are available and go well beyond a standard winery visit — the medieval vaulting and the sheer scale of the underground space make it one of the more memorable things to do in the town.
