St. George's Church

The Parish Church of St. George is Ptuj's most important religious building and a layered piece of architectural history. Its core is Romanesque, dating from the 12th century, though subsequent rebuilding has added Gothic chapels, a Baroque tower, and various other alterations. The result is architecturally rich rather than coherent, and all the more interesting for it.

The interior contains a set of Gothic frescoes and some good stone carving around the portals. The church stands close to the castle and the main square, making it a natural stop on any walk through the historic centre.
