Alcazaba of Almería

The Alcazaba is Almería's commanding sight, a long fortress ridge of towers, walls, cisterns, and gardens above the old city. It is larger and rougher than many visitors expect, with three main enclosures stepping across the hill and views that explain exactly why the site mattered.

Go for the late-afternoon light if you can. The stone warms, the port begins to glow, and the bare hills behind the city look almost North African. The visit is mostly outdoors, so bring water and do not underestimate the climb from the centre.

A story
The Alcazaba was begun in the 10th century when Almería was one of the richest ports of al-Andalus. Its walls were not ornamental: from this hill the city watched the harbour, the caravan roads, and the dry approaches from the interior.
