Civil War Shelters

The Civil War Shelters are a network of underground tunnels built to protect the city during air raids. They are not cheerful, and they should not be: this is one of the clearest places in Almería to feel the 20th century breaking into an otherwise sunlit city.

Visits are usually guided, which is a good thing. The guide gives context to the corridors, the hospital area, and the daily fear of bombardment, turning what might look like bare tunnels into a human story.

A story
Almería was heavily bombed during the Spanish Civil War, including by German naval forces in 1937. The shelter network was dug to protect civilians underground, with corridors, medical spaces, and emergency exits beneath the streets.
