Basilica of Santa María de la Asunción

The Basilica of Santa María de la Asunción dominates Plaza del Cabildo with a façade that feels almost too grand for the tight old town around it. Its stonework mixes late Gothic ambition with later Renaissance and Baroque additions.

Go inside if the doors are open, but do not rush the exterior. From the square, the church and cliff-edge setting form the classic Arcos scene: faith, power, and geography stacked on the same ridge.

A story
Santa María was built over earlier sacred ground after the Christian conquest, and its long construction history shows in the mix of Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque details. The unfinished tower still bears the mark of repairs after the 1755 Lisbon earthquake.
