Castle of Arcos

The Castle of Arcos sits at the highest, most strategic part of town, just off Plaza del Cabildo. It is not generally open as a visitor monument, which can be frustrating, but its mass still shapes the square and the skyline.

Treat it as part of the town's defensive story rather than a standalone attraction. Seen with the walls, cliff, and basilica, the castle explains why Arcos mattered on the frontier.

A story
The castle began as a Moorish stronghold and was later rebuilt by the Dukes of Arcos. Its private status means you mostly read it from the outside, but even that is enough to see how completely it controlled the ridge.
