El Caminito del Rey

One of the most spectacular footpaths in Europe, El Caminito del Rey threads through the Garganta del Chorro gorge on a concrete walkway pinned to vertical limestone cliffs above the Río Guadalhorce. At its narrowest, the path is about a metre wide; at its highest it hangs 100 metres above the water below.

The full route is about 7.7 km and takes two to three hours, passing through two gorges and two tunnels carved directly into the rock. Tickets must be booked in advance at the official website — numbers are strictly limited. The route is one-directional, and a shuttle bus connects the two ends. The scenery is exceptional: the Chorro gorge is genuinely breathtaking, and the sheer engineering audacity of the original construction is still impressive even after the modern restoration.

A story
The path was built between 1901 and 1905 to allow workers to move materials between two power stations. For most of the 20th century it fell into dangerous disrepair — sections of the concrete walkway collapsed, leaving gaps over sheer drops of 100 metres. A full restoration was completed in 2015, and it is now one of Spain's most visited walks.
