El Paseo

Cliff-edge promenade with vertiginous views into the Rivera de Huelva gorge

El Paseo is the main attraction of Zufre — a walkway along the edge of the cliff on which the village is built, looking out over a vertiginous drop to the Rivera de Huelva river below. The gorge here is sheer and dramatic; the village seems to hang above it with no visible means of support. In the afternoon and evening the view southwest over the river valley and the surrounding dehesa stretches for many kilometres.

The promenade is lined with benches and planted with a row of trees that provide shade in summer. It is the social gathering point of the village at dusk, when any remaining residents emerge for the paseo. On clear days the sierra fades into the distance in every direction, giving a sense of Zufre's genuine remoteness from anything larger.

A story
The Rivera de Huelva river gorge below the Paseo drops around 80 metres from the village edge. In the 19th century, the Paseo was laid out as the social promenade of Zufre — the place where the village took its evening walk and watched the light change over the sierra. Today it remains the defining feature of the village, separating the white houses from nothing but air and the valley far below.
