Mirambel is the most complete medieval walled village in Aragón and one of the best-preserved in Spain, located about 10 kilometres north of Cantavieja on the GV-9006. It was awarded the European Prize for Heritage Conservation in 1980 and has been meticulously maintained since: the medieval walls, gates, and towers are almost entirely intact, and the stone streets within them have changed little in five centuries. The village has fewer than 150 inhabitants, which means the restoration has not been followed by commercialisation — there are no souvenir shops or tourist restaurants, just a very handsome and very quiet old place.
The entrance through the main gate, the circuit of the walls, and a walk through the narrow streets past the old hospital and the church are sufficient for an afternoon. Several of the medieval mansions have been converted into rural accommodation, making Mirambel a possible base for exploring the Maestrazgo. Director Ken Loach filmed parts of Land and Freedom (1995) here, using the village as a stand-in for Civil War-era Spain — a role it plays convincingly.
