Ruta del Contorno

The Ruta del Contorno is a circular walking route of about 3 kilometres that loops below and around the rocky spur on which Cantavieja sits. The path descends from the village into the ravine below, skirts the base of the cliff on which the old town perches, and returns via a different approach. It is the only way to properly appreciate the village's extraordinary position: from below, you can see the buildings literally hanging over vertical rock faces, with some house walls flush with a sheer 100-metre drop. The sight is more vertiginous than anything visible from within the old town itself.

The walk takes about an hour at an easy pace and requires no specialist equipment. The path is marked and maintained. It passes through scrub vegetation on the hillsides below the village with long views across the wider Maestrazgo landscape. Spring is the best time to do it, when wildflowers are out on the rocky slopes. The TIC on the plaza can provide a map and describes the route in detail.
