The Balsera Palace is one of the finest aristocratic buildings in the Avilés old town, a late Renaissance structure with an impressive stone facade and heraldic decoration typical of Asturian noble architecture. It dates from the seventeenth century and faces the narrow streets of the historic centre, where a remarkable concentration of medieval and Renaissance palaces survived the industrial period unscathed.
The building is currently used as a cultural venue and is open for guided tours on certain days; the interior courtyard and main rooms are shown on some visits. Even without entering, the facade repays close attention for its carved stonework and the quality of the heraldic shields — each telling something about the families who commissioned the building.
