Café del Mar

Café del Mar is the founding temple of Ibiza's sunset cult. The terrace juts out toward the sea on the Sunset Strip, west of San Antonio's port, positioned perfectly to catch the sun as it drops toward the horizon over the open Mediterranean. Every evening from around 9pm in summer the place fills with people nursing drinks and watching the light show unfold — golds and pinks over the water, the silhouettes of passing boats.

The drinks are expensive by San Antonio standards and the terrace gets packed, but the experience is worth it at least once. Arrive thirty minutes before sunset to get a decent spot. The music, still ambient and unhurried, remains the other draw: no thumping dance beats here, just a carefully curated backdrop for watching one of the Mediterranean's best sunsets.

A story
Café del Mar launched the entire genre of "sunset chill-out music" in the 1980s when DJ José Padilla started playing ambient tracks to match the pace of the sun dropping into the sea. The compilations he recorded here sold millions of copies worldwide and spawned countless imitators — the sound of a generation of European summer evenings traces back to this single terrace.
