Cala Agulla

Cala Agulla is a long arc of pale sand about 2 km north of Cala Ratjada, enclosed by rocky headlands and backed by wind-shaped stone pines and low dunes. It's one of the finest beaches in northeast Mallorca — wide, clean, and not overbuilt, thanks to the protected status of the surrounding land.

The walk from Cala Ratjada along the coastal path takes about 30 minutes and passes through scrubby Mediterranean garrigue with good views back over the town and harbour. The beach itself is popular in summer but large enough to absorb the crowds. The water is clear, the swimming is safe, and the snorkelling around the rocky headlands at either end is excellent. A small beach bar operates in summer; out of season, you may have the whole place nearly to yourself.

A story
Cala Agulla is one of the few large beaches in Mallorca that hasn't been hemmed in by hotel blocks — most of the surrounding land falls within a protected area, so the dunes and pine forest backing the beach have survived intact since the 1970s. The beach can only be reached by foot or by shuttle bus, which keeps car traffic out entirely.
