Neoclassical assembly hall of the Biscayan parliament

The neoclassical building beside the oak tree houses the Biscayan General Assembly, the regional parliament of the province of Biscay, and is still the meeting place of its members. The plain limestone facade hides one of the most striking interiors in the Basque Country — the assembly chamber sits beneath a vast stained-glass dome that recreates the Tree of Gernika in coloured glass, deliberately aligned so that the actual oak appears to be the same tree seen from beneath.

The adjoining Hall of the Window contains a complete chronological display of the fueros (the Basque charters of liberty) and portraits of the lords of Biscay. Entry is free, and English audio guides are available.

A story
The stained-glass ceiling above the assembly chamber depicts the Tree of Gernika in glass — a 220-square-metre window installed in 1985, designed so that the oak above the building and the oak above the parliament chamber appear to share the same canopy.
