Foru Plaza

Central arcaded square where the Monday market sets up

The town's main square — broad, arcaded on three sides, and unusually wide for the Basque country because it was originally laid out in 1366 as a livestock market. The Casa Consistorial (town hall) closes the north side; the rest is a mix of 18th and 19th-century facades.

In the centre, a bronze statue of the Tree of Gernika by Néstor Basterretxea. Outside market hours the square is a quiet place for a coffee at one of the arcade-cafe terraces.
