Monday Market

Centuries-old farmers market held every Monday under the foral arcade

Guernika's market has been running every Monday since the 14th century and is still the central economic event of the week in this part of Biscay. Farmers from the surrounding valleys bring sheep cheeses (the local Idiazabal is unmissable), green Gernika peppers in season, txakoli wine, cider, vegetables, and live poultry.

The Markets Hall on Foru Plaza is the permanent home for the produce stands; the livestock auction runs in a separate hall behind. Both wind down by early afternoon.

A story
The market dates from 1366, when the lords of Biscay granted Guernika the right to trade. It is the reason the town's main square is unusually wide — it was originally laid out as a livestock pen.
