The Basque artist Agustín Ibarrola spent ten years (1982-1992) painting figures onto the trunks of a pine plantation above the Oma valley. Walking through the wood, eyes appear, then animals, then groups of people running between the trees — the figures are split across multiple trunks and only come together when seen from specific viewpoints.
The original wood has suffered from disease and the trees are being progressively recreated on a neighbouring plot. About 6 km from Guernika; the walk in from the trailhead takes 40 minutes through pleasant pasture.
