Getting There

San Sebastián airport (Fuenterrabía/Hondarribia) is a small regional airport 20 kilometres east of the city with limited direct connections — mainly to Madrid and Barcelona. The much better option is to fly to Bilbao airport, which has extensive European connections and is connected to San Sebastián by frequent bus (the Pesa service takes about an hour). Biarritz airport in France is also viable, about 50 kilometres north.

By train, San Sebastián is on the main line from Madrid (4.5 hours on the Alvia high-speed service), Barcelona (about 5.5 hours), and the French border. The main RENFE station is the Estación del Norte in the Gros neighbourhood, a handsome Viennese secession building. The Basque narrow-gauge railway (Euskotren) connects the city to Bilbao and to smaller towns along the coast.

By car from Bilbao is about 100 kilometres (under an hour on the AP-8 motorway); from Madrid about 450 kilometres (4.5 hours). The AP-8 coastal motorway connects to the French motorway network at Irún, making San Sebastián the first Spanish city you reach from France on the coastal route.
