Playa de las Conchas

Playa de las Conchas is on the northwest coast of La Graciosa, about 7km from Caleta de Sebo on foot or by bicycle. The beach faces a gap between two volcanic cones — Montaña Bermeja rises behind it — and catches full ocean swell from the Atlantic. The water is a vivid turquoise, the sand fine and pale, and the setting completely undeveloped.

The currents here can be strong, particularly around the point, and swimming is not always safe. Check conditions when you arrive and ask locally if in doubt. The beach is best visited early or in late afternoon when the day-trippers have left. The walk from Caleta de Sebo follows a sandy track across the island and takes about 90 minutes each way.

A story
Playa de las Conchas is considered by many geographers and beach guides to be one of the finest beaches in Spain. Given that Spain has several thousand kilometres of coastline including the Balearics and Canaries, this is a serious claim. The combination of volcanic backdrop, fine golden sand, and the changing blue of the Atlantic gives the beach a quality that photographs struggle to capture.
