Palencia's principal attraction is its cathedral — one of the finest Gothic buildings in Spain, and one of the least visited. Beyond the cathedral, the city has a pleasant historic centre with a long pedestrianised main street, a riverside park along the Carrión, and several churches and civil buildings from the medieval and Renaissance periods. The surrounding province, the Tierra de Campos, has some of the most evocative Romanesque churches in Castile, scattered in tiny villages an hour or less from the city.
